Evolution of Artistry
For many years, I wondered why I couldn't bring myself to paint in a
"series" format. So many artists I admired had their marketing game
together, and it was sometimes discouraging that my stubborn will kept
me on a rough road, letting it take me here and there with no real
direction other than improving on the last painting.
Something changed a couple years ago when I discovered a new
muse...Palo Duro Canyon. It's only seven hours away and it integrates
the greens I'm already adept at, with the appeal of red dirt and
mesa-like structures. Palo Duro is like a step child in comparison with
the Grand Canyon, but I think that's what makes me love it. One of my
favorite teachers of the 20th Century, Charles Hawthorne, said
"discover beauty where others have not found it," and so I deeply enjoy
trying to bring glory to a place oft overlooked.
If this is what 22 years of following my nose leads to, I gladly accept
this new course. There are many paintings of Palo Duro now in my
studio, and here's a small sampling.

How it Went!
In our last newsletter I told you about an event called Eye-to-Eye,
where I was to paint a sculptor as he sculpted me. For three days, we
demonstrated diligently in front of a small audience. It was a unique
experience, that's for sure! It worked out well for both of us, and I
got to know one of the most prolific clay artists of our generation,
William Jeffrey Jones.
If perhaps owning a sculpture of me looking like a sword fighter
appeals to you, contact Jeff from his link above. I think he eventually
will add a paintbox on the pedestal, and all of my warts and ear-hairs,
so contact him now if you wish to custom order such things.

Results of three days hard work! My painting is 30x24, and Jeff's
sculpture is almost two feet tall. The church in the background is an
event center in Neosho, Missouri.
