Riky "Riky", 14x11, Oil. Recently purchased by my new collector, Joe from Cincinnati. _____ Collecting Advice from an Old Source There are many artists at work right now. How does a budding collector sift through all the choices as their awareness of the larger art community grows? I think this quote is very helpful: The person who has honesty, integrity, the love of inquiry, the desire to see beyond, is ready to appreciate good art. She needs no one to give her an art education; she is already qualified. She needs but to see pictures with her active mind, look into them for the things that belong to her, and she will find soon enough in herself an art connoisseur and an art lover of the first order. -The Art Spirit, Robert Henri, 1923 Why share this with you? As you begin to see my new portrait/figure paintings being posted, you might wonder, "why would I buy paintings with subjects I don't know?" This is a good question to ask, clearly! How could a portrait of a person you've never seen ever mean anything to you? Truly, this painter can't answer that question for you. Out of the blue, a man named Joe messaged me on Facebook to purchase "Riky" (above). I didn't ask him why, but I suspect that he looked into the painting with an "active mind" and found things that "belonged to him": a shared humanity, a memory, a connection to antiquity. Whatever the reason, I'm glad Joe followed his heart. It teaches us so much about the purpose of collecting. Thank you Joe!
